SERCA is the Ca2+-pump enzyme of the endoplasmic reticumum and sarcoplasmic reticulum, which transports two Ca2+ from the cytosol into the lumen of the organelle at the cost of the hydrolysis of one molecule of ATP. SERCA is a major player in the homeostasis of Ca2+ in all cells.
There are three genes for the SERCA protein, which display different patterns of cell/tissue expression. SERCA1 (ATP2A1) is expressed in fast-twitch skeletal muscle, SERCA2 (ATP2A2) is expressed in cardiac, smooth and slow-twitch skeletal muscle, and SERCA3 (ATP2A3) which is expressed more ubiquitously. Each gene encodes a protein of approximately 110kDa.
Badrilla has produced antibodies to SERCA1 and SERCA2 and has produced an antibody to the phosphorylated form of SERCA2 (phospho-Ser38). These are available as antisera in some products or purified immunoglobulins in others, in all cases formulated in dry form to maximise the stability of products in transit, and minimise our impact on the environment.
